The problem

A lapsed forklift card is found by the auditor, not the foreman.

Crews move between sites, cards live in wallets and glove boxes, and the spreadsheet in the trailer was last updated by someone who left in March. The gap gets noticed at exactly the wrong moment: a job-site audit, a general contractor's pre-qualification, or an incident review.

The rules

What the rules require

Forklifts have the clearest rule. OSHA requires an evaluation of each powered industrial truck operator's performance at least once every three years (29 CFR 1910.178(l)(4)(iii)). Refresher training is required sooner when an operator is seen driving unsafely, is involved in an accident or near miss, fails an evaluation, is assigned a different type of truck, or when conditions in the workplace change. The three-year evaluation is the date that lapses quietly, because nothing prompts it except the calendar.

OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 cards are different. Federal OSHA puts no expiration date on an Outreach card, and OSHA itself does not require the training; states, cities, and site owners do. Nevada requires construction workers to hold an OSHA-10 card and supervisors an OSHA-30 card within 15 days of hire, and those cards expire five years after issue (NRS 618.983). Many general contractors' prequalification forms ask for a card issued within the last five years, and OSHA will only replace a lost card if the class was taken within five years. Competent-person designations for fall protection, scaffolding, and excavation are made by the employer, and the standards set no renewal interval. Whatever interval your safety program or your general contractors require is the one to track. First aid and CPR cards from the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross are issued for two years.

Before you start

Do OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 cards expire?
Federal OSHA cards do not carry an expiration date, but many general contractors, states, and site owners require renewal every three to five years. CertKeeper lets you set the validity period your sites actually enforce, so the countdown matches the rule you are held to.
Can I see who is cleared for a specific site?
Yes. Employees carry a location and a job title, and the compliance matrix filters by either. A site's required certifications become columns; a gap is a visible cell, not a surprise.
